Facing the facts of collagen depletion

March 30, 2023

The image of healthy skin is a complexion that’s clear with no spots or wrinkles. Collagen is the major component of your skin that supports that healthy image. It’s a protein made of amino acids that provides youthful elasticity and hydration. After the age of 30, skin can lose one per cent of its collagen per year. UV damage from unprotected sun exposure is the main cause of accelerated collagen loss and decreased collagen formation. That is why people who are exposed to sun for long periods look older than people who avoid the sun or use sunscreen regularly

My recommendations to reduce premature skin aging are:

  1. Use sun screen regularly and avoid excessive sun exposure: To ensure you are getting enough vitamin D that sun exposure provides naturally, take a supplement of 1000 units daily.
  2. Stop smoking: Smoking has multiple risks including cancer, heart attack and stroke but it also affects our skin health and accelerates signs of aging.
  3. Eat healthy food: A healthy, balanced diet includes sufficient lean protein that supports collagen.
  4. Exercise regularly: Although it doesn’t build collagen, cardio exercise promotes good blood flow, helping nutrients to reach skin.
  5. Take supplements: Vitamin C and hyaluronic acid are two of the supplements that are important to support skin health.
  6. Cleansing: Gently clean skin to remove makeup, oil and dirt at the end of the day.
  7. Lifestyle: Practice self-care by thinking of ways to reduce stress.
  8. Get your rest: Sleep at least eight hours daily.
  9. Avoid chemicals: Use moisturizers and other facial products that are made from natural ingredients.

If you are noticing wrinkles around your eyes and that your cheeks are drooping, I can help. Did you know that there are different treatments available to rebuild the collagen in the skin? My clinic offers both ablative laser and treatment with a radio-frequency laser. Do you want to use Botox but are worried about the injections? Tempsure Envi is a radio-frequency treatment that I call “Botox without needles”. It stimulates collagen formation by heating the underlying layer of the skin. It takes at least 12 weeks for collagen to build and between three to five sessions to see long lasting results. Since collagen depletion is ongoing, a yearly maintenance visit is essential.
